Research
Salient Achievements-
The All India Coordinated Research Project on poultry breeding was established in the year 1972-73 under the Department of Poultry Science,College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Jabalpur. The project started as layer project then centre was assigned to study the utilization of sex linked gene in broiler genome for development of dwarf broiler dams. The purpose of the controlled breeding programme during initial days was to develop a dwarf bird to minimize the nutritional cost by reducing the size of the adult bird. Later on breeding programme was modified to develop the birds suitable for rural poultry farming with special focus on dual purpose color chicken variety development in agro-climatic condition of Madhya Pradesh. The following Breeds/Strains/Varieties/Lines of Chicken were developed since inception of the project.
Jawahar 260 (Commercial layer) - By crossing of white leghorn strain IWM as male line and strain IWN as female line a commercial hybrid layer was developed which produces 270 eggs annually with an average 55 gm average egg weight.
Dwarf broiler breeder dam (Parent line white plumage) - A single source dwarf broiler breeder dam is developed from a common dwarfing gene carrying population which has got superior fertility and hatchability and higher egg producing capacity (210 eggs) annually with 30% less feed intake as compare to normal broiler dam. This is real feed efficient dam line.
Colour dwarf broiler dam - Produced by grading up strategy birds have more than 95% fertility and 85% hatchability, matured at 151 days of age and produce 243 eggs upto 72 weeks age with 56 gm average egg wt.
Narmada-XL (Commercial dwarf layer) - By utilizing sex linked recessive dwarfing gene, crossing of dwarf male with white leghorn female a mini white egg layer was developed which weighed 1.3 kg.b.wt., consumed only 80 gm feed/day and produce 220 eggs annually.
Vindhayachal Broiler (Commercial dwarf broiler) - The Vindhayachal Broiler was produced by adopting an alternate breeding strategy by mating the normal bodied sire with the dwarf broiler dam line. These commercial broilers weighed 1410 gm b.wt. at 6 wks age with 2.5 feed efficiency.
Krishna-J (A replica of desi hen suitable for rural and tribal areas) - A replica of indigenous hen with better economic viability has been evolved by utilizing sex linked recessive dwarfing gene dw. The bird looks similar to desi fowl with potentiality to produce 100% more eggs of heavier weight under rural and four times more under intensive system of management.
Dual purpose colour bird (Developed for rural and tribal farming) - The multicolourd bird is evolved by mating of normal coloured sire with Krishna-J female. Males attained 1 kg b.wt. in just 6 week of age. Birds produced more than 120 eggs in scavenging system.
Jabalpur colour bird (Parent line improved broiler germplasm) - A normal colour population synthesized from randomly bred multicoloured population. The population is developed and improved continuously by selection. Birds have ability to grow faster and produce good number of eggs of heavier size. Birds matured at 151 days of age and produces more than 260 eggs annually. This is used as male & female line for production of different commercial colour birds suitable for backyard poultry.
Multicoloured Mediocre broiler - Developed by crossing of coloured synthetic sire with Jabalpur Colour dam. Broilers attained 1.2-1.3 kg b. wt. at 6 weeks age by consuming 2.2 to 2.3 kg feed. These are real lean meat broilers having less than 1.5% abdominal fat.
Purebred Kadaknath - Improved by selection to develop a purebred Kadaknath having Jet black plumage. Birds matured at 169 days of age and produces] 132 eggs annually. Male weighed 1.7-1.8 kg and female 1.3 to 1.4 kg adult b. wt. Birds have got very good fertility (90%) and hatchability (77%).
Crossbred Kadaknath (50% Kadaknath : 50% JBP Colour) - A replica of Kadaknath but bigger in size and superior in egg production produced by crossing of Kadaknath male x JBP Col. (black) female. Birds produce 165 eggs under intensive and 130 eggs under free range system.
Narmadanidhi (25% Kadaknath : 75% JBP Colour) - A multicoloured dual purpose coloured bird developed by crossing and backcrossing of Kadaknath and Jabalpur Col. population. Highly suitable commercial bird under all rearing systems. Birds mature at 162 days of age and produce more than 235 eggs in intensive, 205 eggs in semi intensive and 178 eggs annually in free range system. This chicken variety is recognized and released by the ICAR New Delhi for rural poultry production Birds are very popular among farmers and have greater demand in rural backyard poultry for both table and egg production purposes. |
