Brief History
The Veterinary College, Jabalpur was established on 8th July 1948. Subject of Animal Nutrition was a part of curriculum of the degree of B.V.Sc. & A.H. from the very inception of the degree course. It was however taught by the Department of Animal Husbandry. Post graduate teaching of Animal Nutrition commenced from the academic year 1961. A separate department of Animal Nutrition was established in the year 1963. With the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru Agriculture University in 1964, the Department was styled as Department of Animal Nutrition and Food Technology. Ph.D. degree was started in the year 1971.
Objectives of the Department
- Teaching: Excellence in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral teaching.
- Research: Conducting basic and applied research in the field of Animal Nutrition.
- Extension: Validation and transfer of the nutritional technologies to the target groups
Thrust Areas of Research
- Reinvestigate the requirements of macro and micro- nutrients in livestock, pigs and poultry.

Salient Achievements
- In last one decade various studies were conducted in the department were conventional & expensive source of phosphorus i.e. DCP (Di-calcium phosphate) was successfully replaced by cheaply available DAP (Di-ammonium phosphate), rock phosphate (RP), Heat treated defluorinated rock phosphate (HTRP) and single super phosphate (SSP) to economize mineral mixture and thereby reduced feed cost for livestock and poultry.
- Performance enhancers in poultry & livestock: Cinnamon and Thyme essential oils and Herbal feed additives like Tulsi leaf, Ashwagandha root, Punarnava, Pappaya leaf , neem leaf and Amla were incorporated in diet of broilers and resulted in improved immunomodulation and performance with better economic return. Supplementation of different Acidifiers, different Enzymes like Phytases, Proteases (monocomponent) and Carbohydrases (Xylanase, Mannase and Amylase) & Protein hydrolysate, Whey proteins, Bacteriophages, monoglycerides, Lysolacithin, fatty acid esters with emulsifiers causes an improvement in growth performance, feed utilization, meat quality and immune system in broilers.
- Technology developed: Department under AICRP has evolved area specific mineral mixture (ASMM) for different livestock.
- Identification and inclusion of nonconventional feed resources available in M.P. either as replacement or as a supplement in the ration of livestock and poultry have been extensively carried out in the department under AICRP & NATP projects.
- Nutrients requirement for different livestock and poultry has been extensively worked out in the department under ICAR & other projects.
- Complete feed technology: Complete feed processing unit was developed under ICAR & MPCOST projects in the department for the preparation of complete feed pellets incorporating dried fallen different tree leaves & non conventional feed resources available in M.P.
- Bypass nutrients technology: In our laboratory methods were evolved of making bypass nutrients.
- Use of Azolla (Azolla filicoides) as a Protein Source in Animal Feed
- Supplementation of 250 g/d linseed oil or 570g/d whole linseed could be useful in improving fatty acid profile in milk of lactating Murrah buffaloes.
- Supplementation of different designer diets in layers can increase the egg ω:3 PUFA by 2-5 times, Vit -E by 4 times and mineral content by 2-4 times.
Organized ICAR Short Course
- ICAR 10 day short course “Nutritional Perspectives for augmenting animal productivity: an approach to double farmers’ income” (From 23rd July to 1st August, 2018) in Dept of Animal Nutrition, College of Veterinary Science and A.H., NDVSU, Jabalpur (M.P.)
